Signs Someone Is Thinking of You, and How to Read Them Honestly

Love5 min read

It is one of the most searched questions in this subject, and the honest answer has two halves that have to be held together.

The first: a great many people report sensing when someone is thinking of them, and the experience is consistent enough across cultures to be worth taking seriously. The second: this is also the area where wishful thinking does the most damage, because the signs are easy to produce on demand once you are looking.

The signs people report most

  • A sudden, unprompted thought of them: the most commonly reported, and the one hardest to dismiss when it arrives out of nowhere.
  • Dreaming of them after a long absence.
  • Hiccups, a twitching eye, or a ringing ear: folk signs with very old roots in several cultures.
  • Encountering their name repeatedly over a short period.
  • A shift in mood you cannot account for, especially one that does not match your day.
  • Objects associated with them turning up: a song, a place, a smell.
  • Waking at the same time repeatedly, often between three and four in the morning.

The honest reading of each

Several of these have ordinary explanations, and saying so does not require dismissing the experience. Seeing a name repeatedly is usually frequency illusion: once something is salient you notice instances you were already passing. Waking at the same hour is usually a sleep cycle. Hiccups are hiccups.

The one that resists easy explanation is the unprompted thought, specifically when it arrives with no trigger, about someone not on your mind, followed shortly by contact. People who have experienced that one rarely find the ordinary accounts satisfying, and it is not unreasonable of them.

The test is not whether you noticed a sign. It is whether you noticed it before you started looking.

Telling an intuition from a wish

  • An intuition usually arrives unbidden and is specific. A wish is cultivated and tends to be vague.
  • An intuition is often neutral or inconvenient. A wish is flattering.
  • An intuition does not need a list to confirm it. If you are counting signs, you are building a case.
  • An intuition does not change when the evidence changes. A wish does, quietly.

What to do about it

The uncomfortable truth about this question is that it is almost always a proxy. Very few people want to know whether someone is thinking of them. They want to know whether to reach out, whether to wait, or whether to let go.

Those are answerable. Whether a particular person thought of you last Tuesday is not, and will not be, no matter how many signs you gather. If you are circling this question for weeks, the thing to take to a reading, or to a friend, is the decision underneath it.

Common questions

Does a sudden hiccup really mean someone is talking about you?
It is an old and widespread folk belief, and there is no mechanism behind it. People who find the tradition meaningful are welcome to it; it is not evidence.
I keep dreaming about my ex. Do they miss me?
Dreams about an ex are far more often about an unfinished pattern in you than about that person's current state of mind. It is one of the most common recurring dreams there is.
Can a reading tell me what someone else is feeling?
Many advisors will decline to read a person who has not consented, and that boundary is a good sign rather than a limitation. What a reading can do is work on your side of it, which is also the side you can act on.
